How to check a readability score
Only the third step changes anything about the writing itself.
Give it enough text to be stable
Paste several paragraphs at least. Every one of these formulas is an average, and averages over three sentences bounce around wildly — one long sentence in a short sample can move the grade by two years. A few hundred words settles them; SMOG in particular was designed for samples of thirty sentences or more and the panel says so when yours is shorter.
Read the consensus first, the six scores second
The headline is the median of the five grade-level formulas, which is a more honest single number than any one of them because it is not hostage to whichever formula happens to dislike your vocabulary. Below it, Flesch Reading Ease runs the other way on a 0-to-100 scale where higher is easier, and the five grade formulas each report a US school year.
Fix the sentences it names, not the whole text
The last panel lists the five hardest individual sentences with their own grade level, the number of words in each and how many of those words run to three syllables or more. Splitting two monsters usually moves a document's grade further than an hour of general tidying, because sentence length is the term every one of these formulas weights most heavily.

Frequently asked questions
What readability score should I be aiming for?
It depends entirely on who has to read it, and the sensible targets are lower than most writers expect. General web copy and journalism aim at around grade 8 to 9, which is where a mainstream newspaper sits. Health information written for patients is usually held to grade 6 or below on the advice of medical bodies, because comprehension collapses when a leaflet outruns the person holding it. Academic and legal writing routinely runs at grade 14 and up, and that is defensible for its audience — a corporate policy at grade 16 aimed at all staff is not.
Why do the six formulas give different answers?
Because they were built at different times, for different readers, from different raw material. Flesch calibrated against reading tests from the 1920s and 1930s; Gunning worked with newspapers in 1952; McLaughlin built SMOG in 1969 against complete comprehension rather than the 50 to 75 per cent his predecessors accepted, which is why it usually reports the highest grade of the six. Coleman-Liau and the Automated Readability Index count letters instead of syllables and so treat short technical jargon as easy. A spread of two to three grades between them is completely normal; a spread of four or more usually means the text contains something the formulas cannot parse.
How much text do I need for the score to mean anything?
At least 100 words, and preferably 300 to 500. Flesch built and validated his formula on 100-word samples, and the convention in readability research is to take several such samples from different parts of a document and average them rather than scoring the whole thing in one pass. SMOG is the strictest: McLaughlin specified 30 sentences, taken as 10 from the beginning, 10 from the middle and 10 from the end, and its score is unreliable below that.
Do bullet lists, headings and tables break the score?
They distort it, sometimes badly. A heading with no full stop is treated as one sentence, which is fine; a bulleted list where the items have no terminators is read as a single enormous sentence, which is not, and it can push a whole document up several grades on its own. Tables and code produce runs of tokens the formulas were never designed to see. If a document is mostly structured content, score the prose sections separately — and treat a wide disagreement between the six as a hint that something like this is going on.
Which formula should I actually use?
Flesch-Kincaid if you need one number and no reason to prefer another — it is the most widely recognised, is built into word processors and is written into US federal and state plain-language requirements. SMOG if the material is medical or safety-critical, because it targets full comprehension and health-literacy guidance is written around it. Gunning Fog for business and technical writing, which is what Robert Gunning built it for. Coleman-Liau or ARI when the text is full of proper nouns or technical terms whose syllable counts are unreliable.
Can I improve the score without improving the writing?
Yes, trivially, and that is the honest limitation of every formula here. Replace half your commas with full stops and the grade drops a year or two while the prose gets choppier and no clearer. None of these formulas reads your text: they count sentence lengths and word lengths and infer difficulty from the correlation. They cannot see word order, unfamiliar concepts, missing context, ambiguity or a badly organised argument — all of which matter more to a real reader than the arithmetic does.
Does readability affect search rankings?
Not directly — no search engine publishes a grade-level threshold or scores pages on one. It matters indirectly, and substantially: a page a visitor can follow gets read, quoted and linked to, and a passage written in short declarative sentences is more likely to be lifted as an answer than one buried in a 60-word subordinate clause. Write for the grade your audience reads at because it makes the page work, not because a crawler is checking.
Six formulas, six different rooms they were written in
Readability formulas are not variations on a single theory. Each was built by someone with a specific problem, and the differences between them are the differences between those problems. Robert Gunning was a consultant hired by newspapers in the 1940s who thought American business writing had a fog problem, and his 1952 index deliberately counts long words as a proxy for abstraction. G. Harry McLaughlin published SMOG in 1969 with a pointed argument against his predecessors: they had calibrated against readers who understood 50 to 75 per cent of a passage, and he thought a formula ought to predict the level at which a reader understands all of it — which is why SMOG almost always returns the highest number of the six and why health-literacy guidance is written around it. Meri Coleman and T. L. Liau in 1975 and the US Air Force team behind the Automated Readability Index in 1967 had a different concern entirely: syllables are hard for a machine to count, letters are easy, so both formulas swap one for the other and lose the ability to tell a long familiar word from a long unfamiliar one.
What they share is a shortcut. None of them reads anything. They measure two surface properties — how long the sentences are and how long the words are — and rely on those correlating with difficulty, which across a large body of text they genuinely do. The correlation is not the cause, though, and that gap is where every criticism lives. A formula cannot see that a sentence is ambiguous, that a paragraph assumes knowledge the reader does not have, that the argument is out of order, or that a short word is a term of art. It cannot tell a well-known five-syllable word like information from an obscure one. And it is trivially gamed: chopping sentences in half improves every score here while making the prose worse. Researchers have made this point since the early 1980s, and it remains the reason to treat a grade level as a smoke alarm rather than a thermostat.
Used that way they are genuinely useful. A consensus grade of 16 on a letter to customers is telling you something true, even if it cannot tell you what to do about it. The panel of inputs above is where the actionable detail lives: if your words per sentence is 28, that is the lever; if it is 15 and the grade is still high, the vocabulary is doing it. Scoring a document does not involve sending it anywhere
All six formulas are arithmetic over counts, and both the counting and the arithmetic happen in this browser tab. That makes the page safe for the documents readability checking is usually wanted for — patient information before it is approved, an insurance policy in draft, an internal report, a student's coursework — none of which is uploaded, logged or retained. Reload the page and the text is gone; there is nothing stored to go back to.
